Rear Admiral Ananda Peiris RSP, VSV, USP, ndc, psc, DISS is the second Director General of the Department of Civil Security to have assumed office on 12th February 2009, since the Civil Security Department was founded in 2006.
He has been the Commander at Southern Naval Area in 2006, Commander at Western Naval Area in 2007 and Commander at Eastern Naval Area in 2008. To his credit, Rear Admiral Peiris has been actively engaged in and led all Naval operations both at sea and on land where Naval troops were deployed during this period.
As a brilliant product of Ananda College, Colombo and at Dharmapala Vidyalaya, Pannipitiya where he obtained his primary education, he excelled in many spheres. He showed his prowess in the field of sports and brought fame to both his schools. He captained the Ananda Football team and was awarded colours in 1974. His extraordinary talent in Football made him to play for Sri Lanka schools. He was one of the outstanding sportsmen produced at Ananda who represented college in Rugger, Football, Cricket, Hockey and Athletics. In recognition of his talents in sports, he was appointed a senior prefect in 1972.
He later played Rugger and Football for Sri Lanka Navy and was awarded colours in both games. Rear Admiral Peiris captained the Navy Football team in 1984 and represented Defence Services team that toured Pakistan in 1984. He represented the Navy Cricket in “Daily News Trophy” tournament. He was the manager of the National Football team in 2009 and now he is Vice President of the Sri Lanka Football Federation at present. He has served as the secretary of the Navy Sports Board and the Defence Services Sports Board.
He joined the Sri Lanka Navy as a Cadet Officer in the Executive branch in 1974. He was adjudged as the Best Sportsman Cadet in 1975. Subsequently, he rose to the ranks of Midshipman (1975), Acting Sub Lieutenant Commander (1987), Commander (1992), Captain (1997), Commodore (2002) and Rear Admiral (2006) respectively. Among the many courses he took part were among the many career development programmmes. Officer Cadet course and Midshipman course (Sri Lanka), Sub Lieutenant Technical course (India), International Patrol Vessel course (UK), Long Navigation course (India), Naval Staff course (USA), Diploma in Security Studies (USA), National Defence College course (Bangladesh) he has followed during his illustrious career spanning over 38 years.
During this period he has held a number of operational and staff appointments such as the first Incharge of the Isreal built Super Dvora type craft, Squadron Commander of fast attack craft, and of fast Gun boats, Commander of SLNS Sooraya and Jayasagara, Commander SLNS Tissa (Trincomalee), SLNS Gemunu, Deputy Area Commander (West), North and South, Area Commander South and West, Director Operations, Director Administration and Welfare, Director of Personnel and Training, Director of General Services.
Later he was moved to Eastern Naval Area (2008) where he was entrusted the task of conducting all Naval Operations and the control of land areas of Naval deployment. He was instrumental in extending defence programme of the Colombo port and securing from Panadura to Negombo and thus prevented the hub of Sri Lanka’s economic activities from the LTTE suicide bombers / sea Tigers. In the midst of worsening security scenario, (2007) he was appointed as the competent authority of Colombo harbor during his tenure as Commander Western Navel Area where he successfully thwarted a LTTE suicide surface attack on Colombo harbor involving 5 suicide boats. He successfully overcame a LTTE air raid as well.
Rear Admiral Ananda Peris is a recipient of many awards and decorations such as Rana Soora Padakkama (Twice), Vishista Seva Vibhushanaya, Uttam Seva Padakkama, Purna Bhumi Padakkama, Riviresa Campaign Service Medal, Sri Lanka Navy 50th Anniversary Medal, Sri Lanka Armed Services Long Service Medal and 50th Independence Anniversary Commemoration Medal.
He is married to Ms. Kumuduni Peiris and they have two sons, Lieutenant Ransith Peiris (27) Sri Lanka Navy and Udara Peiris (24).
